How can you target different generations with recognition? We’re finding in our workplace, with rewards and recognition, that what motivates a baby boomer may not motivate a Gen X’er or Millennial and so forth. Thoughts?
There are many different intrinsic and extrinsic factors that motivate people differently. Consider too that just because someone falls into a specific generation classification does not mean that they are all motivated by the same things. That’s why it is important to have a diverse reward selection that appeals to different generations and cultures. Then, employees can choose a reward that motivates them and work towards achieving their goal and their reward. Furthermore, it’s an excellent strategy to make recognition criteria aligned to the corporate values. This should motivate all employees generation-wide because they are aligned to the same values and infused with a sense of mission.
Hope this helps!
