In 2013, more employees went mobile than ever before (75 percent of North American workers are!) and became globally dispersed (30 percent of the workforce is remote, and counting) and the workforce moved closer to a Millennial-dominated demographic (coming in 2020). With these major workforce changes, the pressure is on for employers to engage, align, and recognize their A-players.
Throughout the year, we gathered and reported our readers with research on the growing need for Employee Success platforms, best practices for engaging all types of workforces, and a whole lot of insights into HR, technology, and the changing landscape of the workplace. Along the way, we learned a ton, and we hope you did too. Disengaged employees are all around us. In fact, 70 percent of the workforce is either disengaged or actively disengaged (meaning they’re sabotaging everyone’s experience at work). But what do disengaged employees really look like? Our most popular post of 2013 offers an insightful Slideshare that gives employers a glimpse into the dreary world of disengagement, and provides a unique way to celebrate employees’ successes.
The real reason employees leave companies is a constant source of debate. In 2013, sources from Glassdoor to Gallup to the Bureau of Labor Statistics hotly contested whether career growth, compensation, or bad managers were to blame. We presented the arguments, and a little research of our own, to parcel out why employees are really looking for greener pastures.
In June, we presented the findings from our engagement survey with HCI, which found, among other things, that men are much more likely to describe themselves as “highly engaged” than women. We were surprised, but then we dove deeper to find out why. Read on to learn more—and let us know what you think!
It’s time to say goodbye to the annual performance review. More in 2013 than ever, the perennial once-yearly recap of an employee’s performance is being found to be arbitrary, unhelpful, and really more of a nuisance than anything.
